Adopt a chick

Maintaining the “Urban Birds – Macaws in the City” Project has been a challenge, given that the project depends on the support of individuals and companies. In order to promote and continue the project, the Hyacinth Macaw Institute has created the “Adopt a Chick” Campaign. The campaign is for the symbolic adoption of a nestling from the parents of the birds that occupy the cavities in the dead palm trees located in Campo Grande-MS.

Being a symbolic GODPARENT means that you will be able to keep track of your godchild through the information in the research project, which you will receive periodically. You’ll contribute to the research, you’ll christen the cub with the name of your choice and you’ll be happy to know that your godson will remain free in the wild.

In Campo Grande, the blue-and-yellow macaw has been used as a symbol in schools, serving as a driver for various educational and biodiversity conservation projects.

In the scientific field, a number of research projects have arisen concurrently with the “Urban Birds – Macaws in the City” project. An important factor in studies to improve knowledge that interface with research into the species has been on the agenda at universities and other research institutions. The species’ interactions with various elements of nature have enabled us to uncover indicators of relevance to the scientific community and to improve environmental conservation strategies.

In public policy, the project has also inspired and supported the drafting of legal guidelines for the protection of biodiversity. In 2015, through Municipal Law No. 5,561, of June 15, Art. 1, the Blue-and-yellow Macaw was established as the Symbol Bird of the Municipality of Campo Grande, in line with the efforts and dedication of the “Urban Birds – Macaws in the City” Project for the conservation of the species. In 2018, Municipal Law no. 6,075 was sanctioned to prohibit the cutting, felling, removal or sacrifice of trees, adult or not, where the nests of the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) and Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) are located. ). And recently, Municipal Law no. 6567, of March 19, 2021, recognized the Municipality of Campo Grande as the Capital of the Macaws and established September 22 as the “Municipal Day for the Protection of Macaws”. The aim of electing this day is to inform the community about the need to ensure the conservation of local fauna, with macaws as the flagship species.

Why Adopt?

Periodically, the godparent will receive reports on the activities and discoveries made by the project’s field team, where the “godparent” will keep track of news about their “godchild” and other information relating to the project. In advance, they will receive the following items:

  • A course to become a godfather or godmother.
  • A personalized mug.
  • An adoption certificate, from the Hyacinth Macaw Institute, with the number of the nest and the name of the godchild you choose.
  • An exclusive photo, taken by the Urban Birds – Macaws in the City Project team, in high definition, which can be used as a screen saver, posted on social media, printed on a poster or even used in a campaign or advertising piece, as long as it is accompanied by the campaign seal.

The sponsor will be able to publicize the fact that they are the GODPARENT OF A CHICKEN and responsible for carrying out part of the nest monitoring activities of the Urban Birds Project – Macaws in the City, during the period of validity of their Adoption Certificate, which is one year. This can be done through the campaign seal, which will be made available digitally and physically as a sticker.

At the end of the adoption period, the sponsor will receive a Final Report containing all the information on the monitoring carried out, the successes achieved and any other information that may be necessary. The sponsor who is interested can visit the adopted chick during the monitoring sessions of the Urban Birds Project – Macaws in the City, in Campo Grande and get to know the project team’s field work up close.

Please note that you will need to make an appointment with the project team in advance and have your own transportation.

What is the donation for being a godparent?

The contribution amount for this edition of the 2020 Campaign is R$2,000.00 (two thousand reais) for one chick for one year (the duration of the adoption). This amount can be paid in 10 installments, R$200.00 per month, as agreed in the contract.

We emphasize that the Urban Birds Project – Macaws in the City team carries out its work seriously and responsibly, with great support for the knowledge and results achieved.

However, we feel the need to remind the Campaign’s partners that, when dealing with nature, unforeseen events can happen, such as falling nest trees, flooding of nests, laying of infertile eggs, predation of eggs and chicks, mortality due to poor formation, infertility, among others. All of these cases have been observed over the years by our researchers and, should they occur, they will be reported to the godparents.

We would like to congratulate you for being interested in being part of this work and we remain at your complete disposal to clarify any doubts.
